National Walking Month – why we love walking & wheeling

Bryan Way Ducklington Lake

With National Walking Month coming to an end, we’re thinking about the reasons why walking and wheeling helps us feel happy and healthy.

Why should you get outside walking and wheeling?

We asked Dick, Mark and Marianne from our Bryan Way supported living household why they love walking so much and they came up with so many reasons! Here’s how it helps them to feel happier and healthier:

“Walking is good exercise, it is fun and it feels good. It improves mood and makes me happy to see the nature around us.”

“Walking allows me to spend time with my friends. It’s a great way to lose weight and it’s an easy exercise that you can do daily.”

“You will get your dose of vitamin D from the sun, it’s accessible for those with asthma and it helps me with my sleep.”

There are clearly so many reasons to keep getting outside and enjoying nature! We’re definitely going to continue walking and wheeling even though National Walking Month is nearly over. To find out even more reasons why us Brits love walking, head to the Living Streets website.

Walking and wheeling at Style Acre

As part of our Ways to Wellness programme, we’re encouraging people to get moving year round. At our community hubs, people we support are really happy to be back walking together following covid restrictions easing. People we support can take part in walk leader training so that they can lead walking groups. They’ve also been completing walking sheets, to help compile a book of accessible walking routes.

If you’re interested in getting involved with walking at Style Acre or with our Ways to Wellness programme, contact Anita Powell, Ways to Wellness Coordinator.
