Why?

We have been supporting Jack, 36, at our Wallingford hub for 11 years. Jack has autism, he lives with his family and requires 1:1 support to attend day opportunities. In order for Jack to travel safely, he needs to be driven in a mini bus, rather than the 7-seater cars that we usually use. Jack can become very agitated if he is not travelling in a mini bus and as such, it is not safe for him to travel in any other vehicle. One of the most important things in Jack’s life is the independence and freedom the use of a mini bus gives him; he cannot access day opportunities without it. The mini bus we currently use urgently needs to be replaced. The same vehicle has been used to support Jack for his 11 years at Style Acre, it has been repaired several times and this is no longer sustainable or economical.

Style Acre deliver personalised support to Jack, which includes sole use of the mini bus. The mini bus is a safe space for Jack. The space available means he can be driven safely, sometimes accompanied by a friend but otherwise on his own, dependent on his needs each day. This would not be possible in a smaller vehicle. Jack uses the bus to travel to the day hub from his home and to activities he attends which are tailored to his needs. Jack attends a cooking session each week and also attends specialist sessions at Thames Valley Adventure Playground and Wheels for All. Jack finds going for a drive soothing and sometimes this is what he chooses to do as his activity for the day.

Jack, his support worker and the mini bus sometimes fulfil a wider role at Style Acre, carrying out odd jobs for the day hub or our social enterprises. This may involve picking up and delivering larger items. Jack really enjoys this as it gives him a sense of purpose and belonging, as it is really helpful to the wider charity and our day to day activities.

We need to purchase a new mini bus so that we can continue to offer Jack the support that he needs. We have to raise funds in order to continue offering the best support to adults with learning disabilities and autism that we can. This includes raising funds for new vehicles and equipment at our day hubs. We need to raise a minimum of £5,000 to purchase a used mini bus that can be used primarily by Jack. Jack lives at home with his family and is reliant on his personal budget from the local authority to pay for the support he needs. Jack’s support package covers some mileage costs, but not vehicle purchase costs.

“We are extremely grateful to Style Acre for the wonderful individual care they provide for Jack. The ‘blue bus’ has become his home from home, and is essential for his transport, as he can become upset and anxious in a smaller, more cramped vehicle. Any donations made to this cause will be greatly appreciated.” Jack’s mum
