The Style Acre Banbury Resource – known as SABRe – is our newest service in the heart of Banbury. It opened in May 2015 and has capacity to support up to 80 people –  to date 64 people have attended the service, with 52 becoming regular attendees.  The service helps people with mild to moderate learning disabilities and autism to learn new skills, find volunteering and employment opportunities and make new friends.

Adults with mild learning disabilities often receive limited or no Individual Budget from the local authority to purchase support.  This leaves many people unable to fill their days with meaningful activities and this can lead to feelings of isolation.  At SABRe we can provide support funded through peoples’ Individual Budgets. However, Big Lottery funding has enabled us to offer drop-in sessions to individuals with mild learning disabilities with no budget.

A large IT suite provides opportunities for people to gain computer skills, carry out internet research, develop a CV and apply for jobs.  Other activities are organised both at SABRe and off-site include Zumba, swimming, singing, horse-riding, golf, bowling, sports and crafts. Regular sessions are being held in cookery and ‘Cooking with Confidence’. There is a walking group, ladies group and a gents group, all providing social interaction.  Regular trips are organised to places of interest, such as Warwick Castle, Cadbury World and Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

Work development is an important element to SABRe, with many keen to gain meaningful work experience and ultimately, paid work.  Local company, Hawkins Group provide a rolling programme enabling people at SABRe to work at their offices.  We have a number of volunteering opportunities on-site, with people regularly volunteering on SABRe’s own reception (answering the phone and door, running the tuck shop and carrying out office admin) and at our social enterprise, The Little Bookshop.

If you are interested in attending SABRe, please contact Hannah, SABRe Manager, or pop in for a chat.

What people say about SABRe

John in the shopStyle Acre is very helpful, friendly. It has lots of different activities and a chance for me to meet other people with learning disabilities.

People with mild learning disabilities in Banbury often seem lonely and isolated.  It is a myth that people with learning disabilities will spontaneously integrate with and use local community facilities; they need active support to do so. I strongly support a service that would enable people with mild learning disabilities to meet each other, to have a base that they felt some ownership of, to have understanding people with whom to share life problems (major and minor) and to be helped to lead more active and purposeful lives.
